London Contours is a cycle jersey design produced as an entry to a student competition set by Milltag and the University of the Arts London. The brief was to produce a design that represented and celebrated London in the Olympic year of 2012. The concept used a triangulated irregular network to illustrate the contours of the city, creating a dynamic and abstracted pattern. This design was developed as a novel way of mapping London, showing the ups and downs of cycling around the city’s boroughs, as the gradient is something that you become more aware of when riding a bike. The colours chosen for the jersey reflect those of London’s visual landscape, the red of the buses, phone boxes and beefeaters, with the blue of oyster cards, Boris Bikes and union flag-covered souvenirs. The design was a runner-up in the competition and was displayed at Central St Martins School of Art and Design and on the Milltag website where a limited production run of the jerseys were available to buy.
