A comparison of the colours used to denote subway lines across the maps of six metro systems: Berlin, London, Moscow, New York, Paris and Tokyo, in response to the brief set for the Information Design Elective of my MA Graphic Design. The poster produced as the output for the project shows the subtle variations and overall similarities among the colours used to distinguish the lines on the schematic transport maps used by many metro systems across the world. In a context where the distinctiveness of colours is paramount for identification and interpretation, the poster demonstrates the relative successes of the six colour palettes. The response to the brief for this project was inspired by ‘A Colour Alphabet and the Limits of Colour Coding’, an academic paper by Paul Green-Armytage.
